Period Dignity Award Judging Criteria
Period Dignity Award Judging Criteria
The Period Dignity Award recognises organisations that demonstrate a commitment to providing accessible, hygienic, inclusive, and sustainable menstrual health facilities for all users. To achieve this award, facilities should meet the following criteria:
- Provision of Free Period Products
Facilities should provide free period products that are readily accessible to users.
The award will consider whether:
- Free period products are available in women's, unisex and, where appropriate, men's washrooms.
- Products are provided through adequately stocked, dispensers or containers.
- Dispensers are located within the washroom and, where possible, within individual cubicles to maximise privacy and convenience.
- Products supplied are of high quality and, ideally, made from sustainable materials, such as plastic-free products and 100% organic cotton.
- Clear signage informs users that products are available free of charge and encourages responsible use by taking only what is needed.
- Provision of Menstrual Waste Disposal Bags
Facilities should provide appropriate menstrual waste disposal bags to support hygienic disposal practices.
The award will consider whether:
- Disposal bags are available in every cubicle.
- Bags are dispensed through touch-free systems where possible.
- Bags are sealable to ensure discreet and hygienic disposal.
- Bags are made from sustainable or environmentally responsible materials.
- Clear signage explains the purpose of the bags and how they should be used.
- Provision of Safe and Hygienic Menstrual Waste Bins
Facilities should provide suitable menstrual waste receptacles that promote dignity, hygiene and user confidence.
The award will consider whether:
- Menstrual waste bins are provided in every cubicle.
- Bins are clean, well maintained and hygienic.
- Preferably bins would operate through touch-free mechanisms where possible.
- Bins are fully enclosed and designed to provide discreet disposal.
- Bin lids operate quietly and close effectively.
- No visible waste is present within or around the receptacle.
- Biodegradable or environmentally responsible liners are used where appropriate.
- Clear signage reminds users to dispose of period products in the bins provided and not to flush them down the toilet.
- Menstrual Waste Management and Maintenance
Facilities should demonstrate effective management of menstrual waste systems to maintain hygiene and service standards.
The award will consider whether:
- Menstrual waste receptacles are emptied regularly.
- Bins are cleaned and maintained to a high standard.
- Facilities consistently monitor and replenish period products, disposal bags and related consumables.
Overall Award Objective
The Period Dignity Award celebrates facilities that actively support menstrual health, reduce stigma, improve accessibility and provide safe, dignified and sustainable washroom environments for all users. Successful entrants will demonstrate a holistic approach to period dignity through product provision, waste management, user information and inclusive facility design.
