Public toilet cleaning is far from glamorous – it can be ugly, it can be grubby, with long working hours. It is often a very lonely job, but someone’s got to do it.

A lighthearted programme on BBC ALBA ‘Trusadh: Gaisgich nan Goireasan – The Ladies and Gents’ offers an insight into what it’s like to be a public toilet cleaner in Scotland in the run up to the 25th annual ‘Loo of the Year Awards 2012’, dubbed the ‘Toilet Oscars’.

Well done Hastings (National Award winner in 2012)!

A message from a recent visitor to the town:

Dear Sirs
Last week while on holiday I visited Hastings. We parked in what I am guessing was the main car park along the front and while we were there my daughter needed to visit the toilets.

All I can say is OH MY GOD! How clean were they! There was nothing at all that could be faulted. They were immaculate. No toilet paper over the floor, no rubbish anywhere. We ended up visiting Hastings 3 times and each time we ended up using the toilets and never once were they anything other than perfect.

Those toilets are a credit to Hastings, please pass on my thanks to the
cleaners of these toilets as they do an outstanding job.

I am known as being quick to complain if something is wrong, but equally I do also like to give praise when it is due.

Jersey Tourism are new LOY Awards Supporter

We are delighted that Jersey Tourism will be supporting Loo of the Year Awards in 2013. Previous entrants from the Channel Islands have won National Awards for Public Toilets, Hotels and Restaurants

Any type of 'away from home' toilet can be nominated or entered in the competition, in any of the sixty separate Awards categories listed on the entry form. Entries are accepted from anywhere in the Channel Islands.

Anyone can nominate - staff, customers, visitors, managers, owners or contractors. Entries need to be authorised by owners or managers, prior to payment of relevant entry fees which cover the inspection visit(s).

2013 Loo of the Year Awards Event

The High Seas Hobbit toilet wins the 2012 Lepicol Home Throne Award

This unique toilet in a whisky barrel won this exciting new award. Entered by Matthew and Carol Short, farmers who live in Frazerburgh north of Aberdeen, their entry was judged to be the best 'Home Throne' toilet. The award was presented by radio and TV's Dr Hilary Jones at the prestigious 2012 Loo of the Year Awards which was attended by over 350 guests and held at the St Johns Hotel Solihull on Friday 7th December. Star of Live at the Apollo, Have I got News from You and QI, Shappi Khorsandi provided the after lunch entertainment.

Matthew and Carole enjoyed two nights complimentary accommodation and dinners courtesy of the hotel and assistance with their travel to the Event from Lepicol and Loo of the Year Awards.

NEW! Loo Monitor Service

The Loo of the Year Awards Loo Monitor Service has recently been introduced to provide independent inspections of any Away from Home toilets against sixty key criteria.

The inspections can be completed at various frequencies independently or as part of a package including entry to the annual Loo of the Year Awards .

This service has been introduced to meet the needs of providers with a group of toilets that wants to monitor improvements in their toilet provision, or performance of contractors, more frequently than on an annual basis. The same experience and expertise valued by Loo of the Year entrants.
