Loo of The Year Awards work with children at Madley Primary School
Today was one of those days that reminds us exactly why we do what we do!
Charles, Jane and I had the pleasure of visiting Madley Primary School, hosted by their Headteacher, Mr Batstone. The school has been a valued entrant in the Loo of the Year Awards for several years, but what truly stood out today was the passion and insight from the pupils themselves.
We met with a fantastic group of Year 3 children (just 8 years old!) who have volunteered to help us review their school toilets. And wow… what a conversation!
They spoke about:
π How toilets make them feel
π‘ The importance of design – light vs dark, noisy vs quiet
βΏ Understanding that not all disabilities are visible, and what different people may need
π§Ό Why cleanliness matters and how it affects everyone’s experience
π± Their desire to keep the toilets as eco-friendly as possible
While structural changes may not be possible, the children are now full of ideas about how the interiors could be improved and how they can encourage everyone to take pride in keeping the facilities clean, welcoming, inclusive, and environmentally friendly.
We are thrilled to announce that the children are now official Loo of the Year Awards Ambassadors; because the thoughts and words of children, the future, are so important. We will be meeting with them again after Easter to continue working on this fantastic project!
Because when children feel comfortable, safe, respected, and cared for… it really does make a difference π
