Loo of the Year Awards: November 2006 News

Top Loos honoured at Scottish Awards Ceremony

A number of toilet providers will be feeling ‘flushed with pride’ after winning top accolades in the 2006 Loo of the Year Awards in Scotland.

The Awards Ceremony took place at The Festival Theatre, Pitlochry on Wednesday 29th November.

The Highland Council schools entries won the National Award for individual categories and the public convenience at Baltic Street, Montrose picked up the top Award for public toilets.

Other National Winners were Penston House, East Lothian for accessible toilets and The Murray Owen Centre, East Kilbride for babychange facilities.

The cleaning team at Lindors Drive, Tranent received the individual Attendant team of the Year Award for Scotland while South Lanarkshire Council picked up the in-house cleaning team Award and Vacman Specialist Cleaning Services the external cleaning contractor Award.

The Highland Council along with East Lothian and South Lanarkshire Councils won ‘Champions League’ Standards of Excellence Awards for winning five or more 5 Star Awards and both Highland and East Lothian Councils, along with Aberdeenshire Council, received ‘Premier League’ Awards for being three of the top twenty Local Authority public toilet providers throughout the UK.

A total of 66 five star, 88 four star and 75 three star grades were achieved by the 246 entries received from all over Scotland.

The 2006 Awards were sponsored by leading washroom service supplier Initial Washroom Solutions, together with Armitage Shanks, Technical Concepts and The British Cleaning Council. The Awards were also supported, as in previous years, by The Northern Ireland Tourist Board.

“Standards of toilet provision are definitely rising”, quotes UK Awards, Director Richard Chisnell. “We’ve come a long way since the start of this increasingly popular annual Awards scheme in 1987”, he says. “Many establishments now use the Awards to gain an independent annual audit of their toilet facilities, since each entry receives an unannounced visit by an authorised Awards Inspector who assess against over one hundred different inspection criteria.”
